'A ROYAL OCCASION' at Saffron Screen

PRESS RELEASE

28 May 2012

‘A ROYAL OCCASION’ AT SAFFRON SCREEN

To mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Saffron Screen presents a programme of classic newsreels and short films from the British Film Institute’s National Archive spanning royal events from 1896 to 1953.

Queen Elizabeth II in Pakistan1961A ROYAL OCCASION: BFI Jubilee Programme (no cert) reveals forgotten footage following Elizabeth II on her glamorous royal tours at home and in more exotic locations abroad during the early days of her reign. Alongside will run sumptuous scenes of royals at state ceremonials, local visits and in rare colour newsreels.

Going further back, in 1896 Queen Victoria granted permission for a short film to be made in the grounds of Balmoral and so began our fascination with watching the Royal Family. 1897 saw the first grand spectacle to be filmed and exhibited – Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Recently restored footage from both of these films will screen as part of the event.

A ROYAL OCCASION is showing at Saffron Screen at 8pm on Tuesday 5 June and Thursday 7 June. Tickets prices for this screening are: Full £6.20, Adult concession £5.20, 18 & under £4.60 and are available from the cinema box office, the Tourist Information Centre, or online at www.saffronscreen.com.
