WHY SAFFRON SCREEN IS GOING DIGITAL
We currently show films via a 35mm projector. The industry is changing: the number of digital screens more than doubled in 2009. It is anticipated that by the time 75% of all screens are digital (2 – 3 years), distributors will not be releasing all films on 35mm. We wish to lead from the front and control our programming, rather than be pushed into this transition process by factors out of our control. Digital projection equipment enables Saffron Screen to continue bringing the broadest range of films to our community.
The benefits of Going Digital are that we will be able to:
Saffron Screen is Going Digital. On Friday 19 February, your not-for-profit independent cinema launched a campaign to raise £60,000 for new digital projection equipment. This equipment is necessary to ensure the future of Saffron Screen and will also provide great benefit to the cinematic experience of Saffron Walden and the surrounding area.
WHO IS SUPPORTING OUR GOING DIGITAL CAMPAIGN?
To date we have raised £26,500 from local businesses, our audience and grants.

PRESS RELEASE 26 July 2010 A FABULOUS NIGHT AT SAFFRON SCREEN RAISED £2,000 In true ‘Sex and the City’ style, a fabulous evening was had by all at Saffron Screen on Thursday, 22 July. The sell-out crowd attended a glamorous night out in aid of the Going Digital fundraising campaign and £2,000 was raised through this event. Westgate of Saffron Walden sponsored the pre-film social event which was followed by a screening of Sex and the City 2 (15). The audience donned their glad rags with Westgate of Saffron Walden awarding prizes for the most glamorous outfits. Delicious cosmopolitan cocktails were served up by the team from The Eight Bells and Saffron Walden Waitrose donated food for the free canapés. The raffle offered treats with Saffron Ice Cream, The Salon and print artist Samantha Morris donating wonderful prizes. All proceeds raised on the night were for the Going Digital campaign, which brings the total raised to date to nearly £34,000. Saffron Screen Development Manager, Amanda Lightstone, said, ‘Everyone had a fantastic evening and enjoyed the film. We were very impressed with the stylish outfits and were thrilled with the generous support from our audience. Raising £2,000 through this event is a real boost to our Going Digital campaign. I would like to thank the sponsor Westgate of Saffron Walden and all the organisations, volunteers and staff who made this event possible. It was a fun social night out for all!’ £60,000 is required to purchase and install digital projection equipment which will secure Saffron Screen’s future as film distributors move towards digital distribution. This equipment will also ensure that films are screened in pristine condition and will allow access to some films closer to their release dates. Most excitingly, it will mean that live cultural events such as theatre, opera, music and ballet can be streamed into the cinema. All donors to the campaign are listed on screen at the cinema (unless they wish to remain anonymous). Donations can be made by downloading a form from here or by contacting info@saffronscreen.com. Saffron Screen is grateful for the support of its Going Digital campaign of Adams Harrison, Furniture & Things, Saffron Building Society, Saffron Insurance, Uttlesford District Council and generous members of its audience.
PRESS RELEASE 28 June 2010 ‘GOING DIGITAL’ REACHES HALF-WAY POINT Saffron Screen’s Going Digital fundraising campaign has reached £30,000. In only four months, the campaign has generated key support from the community, local businesses and small grants. Half way to reaching the £60,000 goal which is required to buy digital projection equipment, Saffron Screen wishes to thank all of those who have donated and supported the campaign so far. Saffron Screen is grateful for the support for its Going Digital campaign from main sponsors: Adams Harrison Solicitors, Furniture & Things, Saffron Building Society, Saffron Insurance, and Uttlesford District Council. Grants from Saffron Walden Town Council and Stansted Airport Community Trust have been much appreciated, as have the generous donations from members of its audience. All donors to the campaign are listed on screen at the cinema (unless they wish to remain anonymous). Saffron Screen’s Chair, Rebecca del Tufo, said, “We are thrilled to have reached the half-way point in our fundraising campaign and have only achieved this level through the generosity of the public and our local community. Thank you to everyone who has supported and attended the cinema. The remaining £30,000 will be raised through special events and grants. We recently applied for six grants and are awaiting responses from the foundations and trusts as to the success of our applications. Digital equipment will make an incredible difference for Saffron Screen and will ensure that we can stay open for the community long into the future.” Digital equipment is vital to Saffron Screen’s future as film distributors are rapidly moving toward digital distribution. Already, the independent cinema has felt the ‘digital’ effect and has had trouble programming some foreign language films. In addition, many black and white classics are now being re-issued only in digital formats, so screening these much loved films will become more difficult. Digital equipment will also ensure that films are screened in pristine condition and will allow access to a wider range of films, closer to their release dates. And, it will mean that live cultural events such as theatre, opera, sport, music and comedy can be streamed live to the cinema. Donations can be made by downloading a form from here or by contacting info@saffronscreen.com
